This section provides information for those nurses and midwives from outside the European Union who wish to apply for registration as a nurse or midwife with the NMC.

The NMC assesses whether or not your education, training and experience have satisfactorily prepared you to carry out the duties of a registered nurse or registered midwife in the United Kingdom. In order for us to assess your application you will need to provide details of your pre-registration education and training (both theoretical and clinical) and your post-registration education and practice

The NMC register is divided into parts that indicate different specialities or professions. These currently include general nursing, mental health nursing, learning disabilities nursing, children抯 nursing and midwifery. It is important to realise that in order to apply for a given part of the NMC register you will need to have actually been trained in that discipline. For example if you have been trained as a general nurse alone then you will not be able to apply for any of the other parts of the register even if the majority of your post registration/qualification experience in your home country has been in sick children nursing for example. Additionally if you hold a combined course you should check with the NMC as to the suitability of this course before you apply.

The NMC is only enabled by law to accept applications from holders of first level qualifications. We will not be able to accept your application if you hold any of the following or equivalent qualifications:

If you do possess any of these qualifications then you are not currently eligible to apply for registration in the UK. However if you wish to pursue a career in nursing or midwifery in the UK and wish to retrain then you should contact NHS Careers .
Please note that registration with the NMC does not exempt you from meeting United Kingdom immigration requirements.

Do I need to speak English to be registered with the NMC?
Yes. If you trained in a non-European Union country whose primary mode of expression is not English, you will be required to undertake and gain a specific mark in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). You must complete the general module and gain a mark of 5.5 in each category and an overall band score of 6.5. You must have sufficient command of English to enable you competently to carry out such activities as:
communicating effectively with patients, clients and colleagues;
writing and keeping patients' notes and records in such a way that they could be used as evidence in any legal proceedings;
explaining a patients' condition and interests to other health care practitioners;
keeping up-to-date with relevant research.
If you are in any doubt at all about your level of proficiency in the English Language then the NMC recommends that you sit the IELTS test. If you wish to find out more about the IELTS test then please consult the website of the British Council , who administer this test.
Even if you come from a country where the primary mode of expression is English the NMC has the right to ask you to take the IELTS test if it considers this appropriate. Additionally you must ensure that you provide all information in your NMC application in English.

Do I have to pay for my NMC application?
Yes. There is an application fee of 117 when you apply. When you initially apply for registration with the NMC you will be sent an information pack which will include an application request form and an information booklet which sets out the application requirements. Should you wish to continue with your application you should then return the application request form along with the payment to the NMC. It is at this point that the full application pack will be supplied to you.

What do I need to send with my application to the NMC?
To help us process your application, all documents other than the NMC forms should be submitted as clear copies on plain white single sided A4 paper. Because the NMC uses an image based computer system and all documents are bar-coded and are scanned upon return we do not accept photocopies or faxes of the application forms. The originals must be returned through the post. The following forms will be supplied to you in your application pack:

An application form. On this form you should enter all your professional qualifications and your post qualification experience. When you send this form back to the NMC you must also supply the following documents: a copy of your registration certificate, and a copy of your birth certificate. Failure to supply these documents will delay your application. You may also supply any other diplomas which you feel may be helpful in the consideration of your application.**

Two employment references. These must be from your recent employment and should be from two senior nurses who have worked closely with you. If you are applying for registration as a midwife then both references must be from senior midwives who have worked closely with you. Please note these references must be from two different people and the NMC will not accept two references from Doctors, administrative staff or nursing agencies.

A transcript of your training. The transcript of training must be an official document issued by the training institution where your qualification was gained. A registration authority reference form. This must be a reference that is completed by your home registration authority and will show that your registration is effective and that there are no outstanding disciplinary issues surrounding your registration.

Apart from the application form that you complete yourself, all NMC forms must be officially completed, signed and stamped.

If you return forms that are incompletely filled in or without relevant certificates, then the NMC will return them to you or the sender. This will delay the assessment process.

You must return all of the application forms within six months of the date on which the pack was issued to you. If you have not returned all the forms by the end of this period, your file will be closed. This means that if after six months you decide that you do want to register with the NMC, you will have to start again. If an application pack has been issued, you will not be eligible for a refund of the payment. It is therefore in your interests to submit your completed application as soon as you can.

**All the above documents must be certified copies. If they have been translated then a copy of the original must be supplied along with the translation and both must have been verified by an official translation agency or by your embassy as authentic. Please note that the NMC is unable to return these documents.

What happens when I return the application forms to the NMC?

When the NMC receives your completed application pack, we will make a decision on your application. When you have been notified of this decision, you may need to find a supervised placement in the UK to undertake additional education and practice. If you are applying for registration as a midwife, when you have been notified of the decision, you will need to find an adaptation course that is run through an approved higher education institution to undertake additional education and practice. The NMC cannot assist applicants in finding an institution that will accept them for supervised practice. Some individuals have found this a difficult part of the process and some institutions charge for providing supervised practice, although the NMC does not encourage this.
